Summary: In 1937, four girls from Louisiana took an oath of allegiance to each other and formed a secret society, led by Vivi Abbot (Ellen Burstyn) called the Yaya Sisterhood.
In the 1990’s, Vivi’s oldest daughter Sidda Walker (Sandra Bullock), a famous New York playwright, does an interview with a reporter from Time Magazine. She talks about her unhappy childhood and how it inspired her work. When Vivi reads the interview, she becomes enraged, cuts off all contact with Sidda, and removes her from the will. In retaliation, Sidda uninvites Vivi from her wedding.
Remaining friends throughout the years, the other members of Yaya Sisterhood kidnap Sidda from her apartment and take her back to Louisiana.
